Seven Lakes clinched its second straight undefeated district title and third district title in a row on Wednesday, beating Taylor 69-43 to improve to 33-2 on the year.
The Spartans had already wrapped up the first seed in the playoffs over a week ago and finished the district season undefeated, a first of their many goals this year. They will be joined in the playoffs by Paetow, who finished second as well as Jordan and Katy, who finished tied for third and will play a play-in game to decide the final two playoff spots.
Seven Lakes earned the first place spot by going 16-0 in district play and only having one district game come down to single digits. The Spartans made it to the regional tournament last year and will start these playoffs against Ridge Point, who finished fourth in District 20-6A. The two will match up Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Seven Lakes. The Spartans finished the regular season on a 25-game winning streak and will be looking to make it back to the area round for third straight season.
Paetow will take on Fort Bend Travis in the first round as the Tigers finished in third place in their district with an 11-4 record. The Panthers are back in the playoffs after a one-year absence. In their last playoff appearance, the Panthers made it all the way to the Region III-5A semifinal. Travis has won five straight heading into the playoffs and only have six losses on the season, making for a difficult opponent in the opening round.
Katy and Jordan will round out the playoff field after both tied for third in district and split their regular season meetings. The two will play 6 p.m. Friday at Cinco Ranch as both attempt to clinch the third spot out of district. Both finished with an 11-5 record, Jordan won the first matchup between the teams 59-55 away at Katy, but Katy had a big answer when the two met at Jordan, winning 75-58 over the Warriors. Jordan finished the regular season on a four game winning streak while Katy won its final three games of the regular season.
The winner of the game will get the second seed out of the fort bend district, Fort Bend Elkins, which finished the regular season with a 23-9 record while going 13-3 in district play. The loser of the matchup will go up against unbeaten Fort Bend Clements. The Rangers are ranked sixth in the state basketball poll and went 30-0 in the regular season and will come into the postseason very confident.
Cinco Ranch finished just outside of the postseason race in fifth with a 9-7 record, Tompkins (5-11) finished sixth, while Taylor (3-13) and Mayde Creek (3-13) were tied for seventh and Morton Ranch (2-14) finished in the ninth and final spot in district.
