Seven student-athletes from Katy ISD have been nominated to this year’s Whataburger Super Team, an award given to some of the top players in the state voted on by people all throughout Texas.

300 football players from around the state earned spots as the final nominees for the team in what will turn into a team of 40 players once votes are tallied.

Three schools from Katy ISD had multiple people nominated for the team with one other school joining on the action. Paetow has both Deyjhon Pettaway and Carmello Brooks nominated for the team, while Katy has Patrick McMath and Byron Nelson nominated for the team and Jordan had both Andrew Marsh and Chad Gasper nominated. Mayde Creek’s Tobi Haastrup rounded out the nominations for the school district.

Pettaway and Brooks both had terrific senior seasons in leading Paetow to its best season since joining the Class 6A ranks. The Panthers allowed just 25 points per game on the year and were especially stingy on the defensive end while going 7-4 overall and 6-2 in District 19-6A play. Both players will be moving on to big time programs as Pettaway signed to play football at Texas A&M and Brooks signed to play at the University of Houston.

McMath and Nelson both were nominated to the team after helping lead Katy to another great season where the team went three rounds deep and Katy won its fourth straight district title, going 11-2 overall and 8-0 in district play. The offensive line duo helped the Tigers average over 40 points per game on the year, including averaging over 225 yards on the ground and 158 yards through the air per game. Katy averaged over 2.7 rushing touchdowns per game and 1.8 passing touchowns per game on the year as the Tigers reached the regional semifinal round of the playoffs. McMath signed to play at Texas Tech University and Nelson signed with the University of North Carolina.

For Jordan, they had its best ever season despite missing one of their best players in Gasper for nearly all of it. Marsh had a strong year and was named the district’s Offensive MVP in his senior season after helping Jordan average over 34 points per game on the season while catching 65 passes for 1172 yards and 11 touchowns, averaging over 97 yards receiving per game and 18 yards per catch. Gasper was only able to manage playing in three games this year while recovering from an injury and rushed the ball 13 times for 103 yards while catching one pass for two yards in his senior year. Jordan even with missing one of its best players, went 11-2 overall and 7-1 in district, finishing second overall in district and making the playoffs for the second straight year before winning a playoff game and going three rounds deep for the first time. Marsh signed with the University of Michigan and Gasper signed with the University of Florida.

Haastrup had the most surprising season of anyone in Katy ISD while playing his first season of varsity of football. The senior defensive end had 11 sacks on the year, including 22 tackles for loss and 50 tackles and 23 quarterback hits all while learning how to play the position of defensive end. Haastrup leapfrogged his way all the way up into a top 300 recruit and most sought after players in the nation. He also helped lead a Mayde Creek defense that allowed under 24 points per game and a good season, as the Rams went 5-5 overall and 3-5 in district.

Former Super Team recipients include Andrew Luck (Stratford HS, Indianapolis Colts), Kyler Murray (Allen HS, Arizona Cardinals), Garrett Wilson (Lake Travis HS, New York Jets), Marvin Mims (Frisco Lone Star HS, Denver Broncos), Jaxon Smith-Njigba (Rockwall HS, Seattle Seahawks), Jordan Whittington (Cuero HS, Los Angeles Rams), Caden Sterns (Cibolo Steele HS, Philadelphia Eagles), and DeMarvin Leal (Converse Judson HS, Pittsburg Steelers).
