No part of a quality education includes reading graphic sexual content

To the Editor:

It is unfortunate that those who espouse traditional family values, love our country, and want to protect children from obscene and harmful materials in our schools are labeled as “extremists” by Anne Russey (“On May 6, keep Katy ISD moderate,” April 27) and others. This matter is not about censorship or “book banning.” This matter is about protecting children from age-inappropriate graphic sexual content. It is the parents’ domain to determine when their children should be exposed to mature adult topics. Discussions about matters with sexual content should take place in the home. Parents are free to purchase any book they want their child to read from a bookstore.

In her column, Ms. Russey is advocating to keep “Katy ISD Moderate.” This is disingenuous. She routinely calls school board members and candidates she disagrees with “white nationalists” or “Christian nationalists.” There is nothing moderate about this approach. Who is “hyper-partisan?” Who is an extremist? One has to wonder about anyone who uses the Southern Poverty Law Center as a reliable reference.

Ms. Russey is attempting to make this school board election about "the books.” This ploy is a distraction. The focus of this school board race should be on improving student outcomes as well as how we best equip teachers and all students to succeed. Teachers want to do what they do best—teach. We should support our teachers and remove distractions and politics from the classroom. The focus should be on academics—Reading, Math, Science and Social Studies.

Election Day is May 6—this Saturday. Do your homework on the candidates. Ms. Russey supports certain candidates she believes will be more sympathetic to her “extreme” views.

Find out which candidates are for strong academics, safety in our schools, and who will also protect our children from sexualization. There is no part of a quality education that includes reading graphic sexual content.

Sincerely,

A.D. Muller
