Koger, Moore lead Katy past Travis in bi-district round

Katy swept Fort Bend Travis in two games in its bi-district series behind dominant pitching performances, as the Tigers didn’t allow a run over the course of the two games.

Lucas Moore pitched a one hitter shutout in the first game, striking out 11 and walking two to lead Katy to a 5-0 victory.

The Tigers took the lead in the second inning, as Brady Englett drove in a run on an RBI single and Dominic Melchor tripled to drive in another. Katy added on to that in the third, with Jhonnatan Ferrebus doubling to drive in a run and Reese Ruderman drawing a walk with the bases loaded to make it 4-0.

Katy then tacked on a fifth in the fifth inning to put things out of reach, as Ruderman reached on an error, allowing a run to score.

As good as Moore’s performance was in game one, it was surpassed by Caleb Koger in game two, as the junior threw a no-hitter in the Tigers 1-0 win to clinch the series.

Koger threw the complete game and struck out six while walking three to secure the win and lead the Tigers past Travis.

Katy had just two hits in the game, but that was all they would need, as both came in the fourth inning. Parker Kidwell led the inning off with a single and after a strikeout, Sutton Hull came to the plate and drove Kidwell in on a single to give Koger all the cushion he would need.

Neither team scored the rest of the way and Koger struck out four over the final three innings to secure the win.

Katy moves on to play Jersey Village in the area round. Game one will be played 7 p.m. Thursday at Jersey Village, game two will be played 6 p.m. Friday at Katy and game three will be played 10 a.m. Saturday at Langham Creek if needed.
