Katy head coach Gary Joseph will feature on cover of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football

Katy head football coach Gary Joseph will grace the cover of the most prestigious magazine In Texas High School sports this summer, as he and his son, Jeff Joseph, who is the head football coach at Port Neches-Groves were chosen as the centerfold for this year’s Dave Campbell Texas Football magazine.

The honor comes off the back of Jeff Joseph leading Port Neches-Groves to a state title last season while Gary Joseph has numerous accolades throughout his career in coaching. Gary, ever the humble man, was surprised he was chosen.

“There’s a lot more people more deserving than myself,” Gary Joseph said to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football. “Jeff, he needs to be on there because it was a great deal they had this year winning the state championship. But for us at Katy, it’s about the next one.”

Gary Joseph has one of the most successful resumes in high school football around the nation. Over his 20 years as a head coach at Katy, Joseph has compiled a record of 265-26, winning five state titles, making the playoffs in all 20 of his seasons as a head coach and winning district in 18 of his 20 seasons. His most recent in 2020. Jeff Joseph has quickly made an impact and a name for himself at Port Neches-Grove, making it to the state title game his first season before winning a state title this past season. Overall, Jeff Joseph has a record of 28-4 over his two years at PNG.

“I just want him to be successful,” Gary Joseph said. “In the state championship game this year I just watched the team and how they handled situations. That’s the great thing about Jeff is no situation is too big for him.”

The story is focused on Gary and Jeff’s father son bond and what was passed down to them from Gary’s late father Eddie Joseph, who coached at Wharton before becoming the Texas High School Football Coaches Association Executive Director. Gary and Jeff are the only active father-son duo to have both won state championships and only the third ever to do it in Texas High School Football history.

“He (Gary) has meant so much to me and my football career and my football life,” Jeff Joseph told Dave Campbell’s Texas Football. “To playing for him in high school to working for him as a coach and now relying as him as a mentor in my first couple years as a head coach. It means everything to me. He’s been such a huge influence not just to me but to so many coaches around the state.”

While PNG finished last year as state champions of Class 5A-Division II, Katy suffered it’s earliest playoff exit since 2001, falling to Cy-Fair 28-21 in overtime and ended the season with a 10-2 record. That is well on the Tigers mind as summer strength and conditioning continues and we inch closer to two-a-days that will start in the beginning of August.

The Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine will also have a college cover, which will feature Texas A&M and former Bridgeland quarterback Connor Wegman and University of Texas and former Southlake Carroll quarterback Quinn Ewers.

“You grow up reading this magazine and with being a coaches kid it was always something you looked forward to every summer,” Jeff Joseph said. “Reading through all the teams at every level and all the stories it was one of my favorite things. So to hear they were interested in doing a story on the both of us was crazy.”
