After a year away from the Houston area, Mike Arogbonlo is returning to a familiar place, coming back to become the next Mayde Creek Head Football Coach, the place where Arogbonlo began his high school coaching career.
Katy ISD announced Monday that Arogbonlo will be the new Head Football Coach and Campus Athletic Coordinator at Mayde Creek, taking over the spot from J. Jensen, who will become a Katy ISD Assistant Athletic Director after this school year.
Arogbonlo comes to Mayde Creek from Duncanville, where he helped the Panthers to a Class 6A-Division I State Title this past year as the team’s quarterback coach and passing game coordinator. He spent one year at Duncanville, going to the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex after serving as Fort Bend Austin’s head coach for four years.
Before becoming the head coach of Fort Bend Austin, Arogbonlo started his high school coaching career at Mayde Creek, where he served as the Rams running back coach and recruiting coordinator from 2007-2009. He then went on to be the offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator at Alief Taylor before moving to Bellaire, where he served as offensive coordinator and the assistant head coach from 2013-2015.
After two years at Bellaire, Arogbonlo moved to Fort Bend ISD and became the offensive coordinator and assistant head coach at Travis for four seasons before becoming the head football coach and athletic coordinator at Austin, a position he held for four years as well.
While at Fort Bend Austin, Arogbonlo accumulated a 7-31 record. His best season with the Bulldogs came in 2019, when Arogbonlo led them to a 3-7 record and 3-4 record in district, earning wins over Dulles, Clements and Bush to finish sixth in district. Before that, Arogbonlo coordinated one of the Hosuton area’s best offenses at Travis, where in his final year as offensive coordinator directed an offense that averaged 44 points per game and finished second in district. Averaging over 283 yards per game through the air and 176 yards per game on the ground.
Duncanville was one of the most explosive offenses in the state last season on the way to a state title. With Arogbonlo as passing game coordinator and quarterback coach, the Panthers averaged over 51 points per game and over 222 yards per game through the air, throwing for over two touchdowns a game while only throwing three interceptions all year long, while the Panthers also averaged over 200 yards rushing per game.
Arogbonlo takes over the football program from J. Jensen, who spent three years as the Rams head football coach, compliling a record of 7-23 overall and 2-20 in district play. The Rams come off a 3-7 season, where they went 2-6 in District 19-6A and finished seventh, earning district wins over Seven Lakes, 31-24, and Paetow, 28-7. The Rams last playoff appearance was in 2019, when they went 9-3 overall and 4-2 in district, advancing to the area round of the playoffs. Arogbonlo will be the seventh head football coach in Mayde Creek’s history.
