Thursday
Tompkins (3-3, 2-2) vs. Cinco Ranch (2-5, 2-3), 6:30 p.m. at Legacy Stadium
Last year: Cinco Ranch 38, Tompkins 28
- A great game kicks off the week, as Tompkins and Cinco Ranch face off in one of the most important games of both of these teams’ season. The winner of this game will have a very big advantage in trying to secure one of the last playoff spots in districts, while the loser will be in a tricky position heading down the stretch of district, depending on other teams results to try and remain in the playoff race.
Tompkins comes into the matchup riding a two-game win streak, as the Falcons have bounced back from a slow start to district with some good performances. The Falcons beat Morton Ranch last game in what was the teams best defensive performance of the season, forcing three turnovers and never letting Morton Ranch get anything going all throughout the game. Offensively, Ethan Meadows ran for 98 yards and three touchowns, while Justin Thierheimer threw for 219 yards and two touchdowns and both KJ Madison and James Mayes had over 50 yards receiving as the Falcons come into the matchup with momentum.
Cinco is on the other side of things, having lost two in a row and needing to bounce back in an important part of their season. The Cougars come off a hard fought loss to Paetow, where they made a valiant comeback attempt after falling behind, but weren’t able to get the win. Cinco struggled again the run game, allowing 289 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. Cinco struggled with its ground game as well, rushing for only 70 yards, but found success through the air, throwing for 210 yards and a touchdown, with Drew Tureau and Scott Eckel both going for over 50 yards receiving.
Both teams will be motivated in a very important game and the matchup might come down to the two defenses and who can minimize the other teams strength, whether that be Cinco shutting down Tompkins run game or Tompkins stopping Cinco’s pass game.
Mayde Creek (3-3, 1-3) vs. Morton Ranch (0-7, 0-5), 7 p.m. at Rhodes Stadium
Last year: Mayde Creek 48, Morton Ranch 7
- Mayde Creek and Morton Ranch will both be trying to bounce back with both in the middle of losing streaks as we head into the last month of the regular season.
Mayde Creek comes into the game on a three game loss streak, but comes off its bye with a chance to recoup and have extra preparation for the matchup. In the team’s last game, Trey Williams had a strong game through the air, throwing for 311 yards on 21 of 40 passing and throwing for four touchdowns. Daylin Robinson had a huge game, catching nine passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns, while Chad Nelson caught eight passes for 108 yards and two touchdowns. Mayde Creek’s defense struggled though, allowing 284 yards through the air and 304 yards on the ground in the loss.
Morton Ranch comes off a loss to Tompkins in its last game as well and also struggled with some of those same aspects defensively, allowing 236 yards on the ground and 229 yards through the air. Morton was unable to get anything going on the ground in the game and also had struggles through the air offensively, but Jayceon Jenkins and Edward Vasquez both had moments they were strong in the game throwing the ball.
Mayde Creek will lean on its strong defense and pass game to try and win the matchup, while Morton Ranch will try to clean some things up, run the ball better and try to earn its first win of the season.
Friday
Paetow (5-1, 4-0) vs. Seven Lakes (3-3, 1-3), 6:30 p.m. at Legacy Stadium
Last year: Paetow 35, Seven Lakes 11
- Paetow and Seven Lakes meet match up this week in a battle between two teams on opposite ends of district right now, as Paetow tries to keep its momentum and Seven Lakes tries to turn things around.
Paetow is in the midst of a five game win streak and has looked better and better each week. The Panthers come off arguably their most important win of the season, beating Cinco Ranch and coming close to clinching a playoff spot in the process. The Panthers were led by Terrence Johnson, who kept up his strong performances, rushing for 215 yards and four touchowns, while Jackson Farrar threw for 123 yards and two touchowns, including a game sealing touchdown with just over a minute left in the game. The Paetow defense limited the Cinco offense as well, only allowing 70 yards on the ground.
Seven Lakes comes off a valiant effort against unbeaten Jordan, where the Spartans made a game of things for four quarters and made things hard for the Warriors despite the loss. Seven Lakes allowed 228 yards through the air and 202 yards on the ground but did come up with a turnover on defense. On offense, Apollo Lema ran in a 9-yard touchdown and Peter Noonan threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Fowler for the Spartans two scores.
For the Panthers, they will try to do more of the same, limit the opposing teams run game and offensively build off their own run game on offense. Seven Lakes meanwhile will hope to have another strong game on defense, stop the Paetow run game, and use a mix of run and pass on offense to keep Paetow’s defense honest.
Jordan (7-0, 5-0) vs. Katy (5-1, 4-0), 7 p.m. at Rhodes Stadium
Last year: Katy 42, Jordan 35
- Katy and Jordan, two of the three undefeated teams in district, meet in a game that has been the most anticipated in the district this year. It is a matchup that could decide the district champion at the end of the year and the first and second seeds in the Division II playoffs, depending on which division Katy ends up in.
Katy comes into the matchup after a dominant start to district play. Through four district games, the Tigers have allowed just 14 total points and they have shut out their opponents in back to back games. They kept that up against Taylor in a shutout win, where the offense also had a huge performance. Tremayne Hill had three touchdown runs, with runs of 41, 21 and three yards, while Gunner Nelson threw two touchdowns, one a 6-yarder to Jon Stephens and another on a 52-yard pass to Israel Olotu-Judah. Jackson Franklin added a 31-yard touchdown pass to Cade Needham.
For Jordan, the Warriors come off a hard fought win over Seven Lakes, where they were tested but showed resilience in the fourth quarter to pull away. The Warriors had a strong performance from Beau Bryant, who threw for 228 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for 65 yards to earn the win. Zion Jones was also instrumental, with 137 yards on 22 carries, while Andrew Marsh had 147 yards and a touchdown on six catches and Landon Williams had 53 yards and a touchdown on three catches. The Warriors continued their unbeaten run with the win and will be trying to beat Katy for the first time this week.
It’s a battle between two teams that could go either way. Both come into it with plenty of momentum, with strong defenses, strong run games and a pass game that develops off of those strength and it will be fun to see how it shakes out.
