Dozens and dozens of local volunteers, including 65 members of Katy’s First United Methodist Church, came together on September 13 in the Lowe's parking lot, 19935 Katy Freeway, Houston to build beds for children in need.
U.S. Anesthesia joined forces with Sleep in Heavenly Peace’s Houston Central West Chapter and Katy’s First United Methodist Church to assemble and deliver more than 125 beds. Each bed was built from scratch on the spot. Volunteers at the bed-building event worked in an assembly line to gather the components needed to assemble the beds, receive tools and training and then load everything into their vehicles for delivery to families. More than 100 beds and bedding sets will be delivered to children who are sleeping on couches, air mattresses or the floor in the Katy region.
“All children deserve a bed to sleep in,” said Katy Mayor Pro Tem Chris Harris, who participated in the project.
Quilters from around the Katy area also contributed handmade quilts for the beds.
The activity is part of USAP Cares Week, the anesthesia provider’s annual nationwide week of service to give back to the communities it serves. Hundreds of USAP volunteers across several states engage in a variety of volunteer activities during USAP Cares Week, ranging from supporting women’s centers to building houses to cooking meals. Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP), the leading non-profit dedicated to providing beds to children in need, took part in the project as part of its seventh annual Bunks Across America (BAA) event during the week of September 6-13, 2025.
USAP is located at 1500 CityWest Blvd. Suite 300 in Houston and its partners practice at both Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital and Houston Methodist West Hospital. Katy’s First UMC is at 5601 Fifth Street in Katy.
