City of Katy Parks and Recreation Dept. earns back-to-back awards

The City of Katy Parks and Recreation Department has again been recognized on the state level, earning a Lone Star Recreation Programming Achievement Award at the annual conference of the Texas Recreation and Parks Society. “This marks back-to-back award-winning events for the City of Katy, a significant accomplishment that underscores the department’s commitment to excellence in community programming,” a city spokesperson said in the February 13 press release.

Over the past two years, the Historic Town Square has experienced a renewed sense of vibrancy and momentum, hosting dynamic events from March through December that have drawn residents and visitors from across the region. From large-scale festivals to family-friendly gatherings, the programming has transformed downtown into a consistent destination for entertainment, culture, and community connection.

“These awards reflect the intentional planning, creativity, and dedication our team brings to every event,” said Tourism and Marketing Events Coordinator Kaci Maris. “Our goal is to create experiences that not only bring people together but also support our downtown businesses and showcase the best of Katy.”

Award-winning programming has had a measurable impact beyond community engagement. Increased attendance at Historic Town Square events has boosted tourism, generated foot traffic for local merchants, and strengthened visibility for downtown businesses, Maris said in the press release.

“The City of Katy’s success is made possible through strong partnerships and community collaboration. The department extends its gratitude to downtown business owners for their ongoing support during event days, as well as to event sponsors whose contributions help elevate the experience for attendees,” the press release said. “Appreciation is also extended to the Mayor and City Council for their continued leadership and support, along with the Parks Board and Keep Katy Beautiful for their assistance throughout the year. Volunteers remain an essential part of each event’s success, providing invaluable time and service to the community.”

In addition to the department’s recognition, Parks Superintendent Richie Kainer was recently named Texas Region Parks Professional of the Year — an honor that follows his recognition as City of Katy Employee of the Year just one year prior.
