Triumphs for local Grammy -winning songwriter Bill Nash: new single and music video

Posted

Richmond resident Bill Nash is a busy man.

At age 80, Nash recently recorded a new single and completed an accompanying music video, which was filmed locally at Mo’s Place, 21940 Kingsland in Katy on March 23.

Bill Nash’s new song – “Locked In Your Lovin' Arms” – was released March 21. It is available on his website at https://bknash.com. The song will be featured on the forthcoming, "Oh Hank" EP, honoring the musical legacy and artistic style Of Hank Williams Sr.

The tune was written by Nash’s son Jimmy, who started the composition in 2015, finally finishing it in 2024.

“While I was living in New York, my parents came to visit me in 2015,” Jimmy Nash told the Katy Times in an email. “We were talking about future music projects, and I told him we should record some more traditional Country on him, like Hank Williams' ‘Long Gone Lonesome Blues’ that feature his yodel. I started it right then and there and got the first verse pretty well written. I wrote another verse shortly after, but life got in the way, and we just didn't ever do the session. I even wrote a second song (“Loads About Ya”), that's also now on the ‘Oh Hank’ EP. It was in early 2024 when my father told me he wanted to do the Hank Williams tribute, that I told him, ‘We need to do those songs I wrote for you,’ and he agreed. Finally, by the summer of 2024, I finished up the bridge and last verse of the song, and we recorded it in November 2024 in Nashville. Just under a decade in the making!”

Jimmy Nash, along with Tommy Mauser, directed the music video, and also served as producer, with Andra Dalto and Kirby Lamars. The video – with a finished length of 3:07 minutes -- required three hours of setup and another three hours of filming. It features line dancers from Houston-based Cross the Line Dancing, led be Britt Beresik, who created unique choreography for the 20 participating dancers.

“One of our friends and producers of the video, Kirby Lammers, also called his sister-in-law, Lynn Popkowski, and she brought a few people from her Texas swing group, so this added a little extra visually for the dance as well,” Jimmy Nash said. “It's fun to have the line dance break out into a full swing and then finish back on the dance Britt choreographed for us.”

Kim Nash, Bill’s wife and song-writing partner and mother of Jimmy, also appears at the end of the video.

But that’s not all.

Nash was signed to Columbia Records when he was only 13 years old as part of “The Nash Family Trio.” Best known for his rendition of Kris Kristofferson’s hit song “For the Good Times,” Nash has also penned songs for country stars such as Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, Diamond Rio, and Larry Gatlin.  And there is still more to come.

Bill Nash, Kim Nash and Jimmy Nash will be performing at the annual Texas Best Music Fest at Mo’s Place on June 1. Founded in 2013, the event raises money for the cause dearest to Nash’s heart – Champions Kids Camp, which helps to nurture children who have survived a traumatic injury, illness, or personal loss, such as the loss of a parent or sibling.

The camp was born out of the family’s own traumatic experience. Their older son, Billy, was diagnosed with leukemia at age two at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston. Even knowing that “you can’t bargain with God,” Bill Nash said that he prayed for three days without ceasing for his son’s recovery – promising, “Jesus, if you will heal my boy, I will sing for you for the rest of my life.” Bill Nash said that even doctors were surprised when the boy was found to be cancer-free shortly after his initial diagnosis.

“Only God could have orchestrated all this,” Bill Nash told the Katy Times in a 2024 interview.

This year’s Texas Best Music Fest line-up features Scotty Alexander, David Lewis and local Katy favorite Hayden Baker and also includes performances by Bill and Kim, as well as by Jimmy Nash. Doors open for the event at 21940 Kingsland in Katy at 2 p.m. with the music starting at 3 p.m. Parking is free. General admission tickets are $25.00 and may be purchased at texasbmf.com.
