Tompkins ends regular season with win over Paetow

Posted

Tompkins just keeps winning.

The Falcons have learned how to win games and more importantly, how to prepare for games and its paid dividends for the team.

The Falcons were riding a five game winning streak headed into this week and had already locked in a playoff spot heading into their game on Friday, but that didn’t matter to Tompkins, they wanted to continue proving a point.

They wanted to show that they can compete with any team and any level of defense, and they did just that, beating Paetow 45-14 and going into the playoffs on a good note.

“We just came out on fire,” said senior wide receiver Matthew Ogunrin. “We really just wanted to make a statement and more importantly, go out and do our jobs, because when we do that we are a really good football team. We had the plan and we had the players, it was just on us to go execute and we did.”

Tompkins offense mad its presence known early, as the Falcons took their opening drive and went straight down the field before Wyatt Young threw a 24-yard touchdown to Ogunrin to get the scoring started.

Code Chapman made an interception immediately after, but Paetow responded by forcing a Tompkins fumble and scoring on a 23-yard touchdown run by Koby Truehill to tie things up.

But Tompkins came back with a score of their own with a 24-yard run by Wyatt Young, and Young threw a 3-yard pass to Caleb Blocker in the second quarter as the Falcons built a 14-point lead heading into halftime.

“We just had to be patient on offense because Paetow has a very talented defense,” said Tompkins head coach Todd McVey. “We just had to settle in and everyone did a great job of doing what they needed to do. The backs ran extremely hard, the receivers blocked downfield well, Wyatt got outside and threw some great balls and the offense played well. It was fun to watch them go out there and execute.”

Blocker opened the second half with a 43-yard touchdown run before Tompkins scored late in the third quarter to pretty much seal things on an 11-yard pass from Young to Rhys Phillips.

It was a big day for Young, who set a career high in passing yards, passing attempts and passing passing touchdowns, as he went 12 for 17 passing for 197 yards and three passing touchdowns to go with 67 rushing yards and another touchdown.

“At the beginning with taking over at quarterback earlier this year, I didn’t really have my full confidence throwing the ball,” Young said. “But I have it back now and I’ve been settling in. That chemistry is there for me and my teammates.”

Paetow got one more score in the fourth quarter before Caleb Komolafe put the bow on the win with a 36-yard touchdown, and Andrew Horner added a field goal late as the Falcons pulled away.

The win was the sixth straight for the Falcons, and it all started after a disappointing loss to Cinco Ranch, as the players came together after the game and decided to take a new approach.

“We had a players only meeting after that game and that’s when we really got our minds together and on the right track,” Ogunrin said. “Everyone in there realized, if we come together do our jobs and fight every single day and keep that up, then the skies the limit for us. I believe in all of the guys here.”

The win was also the 50th for Todd McVey since he became the head coach at Tompkins in what he said was a testament to his staff and the players he has had a pleasure of coaching.

Tompkins moves on to face District 20-6A champion Ridge Point in the Bi-District round at 7 p.m. Thursday at Mercer Stadium.

“It’s going to be a short week and we’ll have to be locked in for every second,” McVey said. “It all comes back to our preparation, we have to get our preparation going. We’re going to make sure we enjoy this one tonight, but we’ll get back to work and ready tomorrow.”
