In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month which begins September 15 and continues through October 15, The Story Peddler bookstore in Bellville will host Fort Worth author Marcela Fuentes on September 25 at 6 p.m. Fuentes will read from her novel “Malas.”

In the book, in 1951, a mysterious old woman confronts Pilar Aguirre in the small border town of La Cienega, Texas. The old woman is sure Pilar stole her husband and, in a heated outburst, lays a curse on Pilar and her family. Rich with cinematic details—from dusty rodeos to the excitement of a Selena concert and the comfort of conjunto ballads played at family gatherings—this memorable debut is a love letter to the Tejano culture and community that sustain both of these women as they discover what family means.

The Story Peddler will have copies of “Malas” for those attendees who wish to purchase a book; however, a purchase is not mandatory in order to attend the event. The store’s author events are always free and open to the public. Fuentes will be available after her book reading and discussion to answer questions and sign purchased books. The Story Peddler is located at 538 W. Main in Bellville.
