The Southland Conference Women’s Basketball Tip-Off event, originally scheduled for Jan. 3-5, has been canceled due to COVID-19 protocols in multiple programs. The Tip-Off would have featured all eight women’s teams playing a bracketed pre-conference tournament at the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas, site of the Southland’s Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament since 2008.
The men’s tip-off event remains scheduled at the Merrell Center, Jan. 6-8, and all games will be televised live on ESPN+. Official league play begins for men’s and women’s teams on Saturday, Jan. 15.
“We regret this unfortunate development that will prevent the Women’s Tip-Off from being played,” Southland Commissioner Tom Burnett said. “However, we want all of our programs safe and healthy as they prepare for the start of league games in a couple of weeks. We look forward to seeing our teams compete through the full Conference schedule.”
The Men’s Basketball Tip-off will include precautionary Covid-19 measures at the Merrell Center similar to those taken at the 2021 Conference Tournament, including an altered physical configuration, distancing requirements, masking, and other necessary access restrictions.
