HOUSTON — Houston’s defense forced two interceptions and held Stephen F. Austin to 144 total yards as the Cougars posted their first shutout in four years, a 27-0 season-opening win Thursday night at TDECU Stadium.

Quarterback Conner Weigman threw for 159 yards and three touchdowns in his Houston debut. The Texas A&M transfer connected with tight end Tanner Koziol for 11 yards in the first quarter, then added scoring passes of 39 yards to J’Marion Burnette and 20 yards to Amare Thomas.

Koziol finished with seven catches for 63 yards, the most by a Houston tight end since 2022. Burnette’s 39-yard grab was the first touchdown of his career. Ethan Sanchez added field goals of 40 and 43 yards.

Houston’s defense limited the Lumberjacks to just seven first downs and 39 rushing yards. Marc Stampley II and C.J. Douglas each had interceptions, while Wrook Brown and Brandon Mack recorded sacks. The Cougars held SFA to 3 of 16 on third down and 0 of 3 on fourth down.

“Outstanding job obviously by the defense,” coach Willie Fritz said. “It is difficult to shut a team out nowadays. We got the chance to play a lot of guys, and it was just a fine job by the staff and, most importantly, the players.”

The Cougars outgained SFA 343-144 and held the ball for nearly 35 minutes. Running back Dean Connors added 50 rushing yards, while Burnette ran for 40.

Weigman said the shutout came as no surprise to the offense, which practices against the unit daily. “They’re amazing and we see them every day,” he said. “The guys up front, the backers, the secondaries — that’s what we expected of them all tonight.”

Senior linebacker Jalen Garner, who recorded a career-high six tackles, said the defense maintained its focus even as the shutout loomed late. “We wanted to treat it like it was 0-0 the whole time,” Garner said. “We just wanted to keep our foot down and hold them to zero.”

The win was Houston’s first shutout since 2021 and its first in a season opener since 1989. The Cougars evened the all-time series with SFA at 2-2 in the schools’ first meeting since 1948.

Houston (1-0) visits Rice on Sept. 6. SFA (0-1) travels to Abilene Christian the same day.
