“We have three guys up front in me, Kortay and Hunter (Merritt) that can play all three positions and it just makes us all so hard to guard,” Stasic said. “We switch out, we pressure teams and a lot for them just can’t deal with that."

Seven Lakes tops Clear Springs, advances to second straight regional final

Posted

DEER PARK – Seven Lakes had been here before, the Spartans had felt the pressure and knew what they had to do.

The Spartans aren’t new to the Regional Tournament like most teams, the core of their team has experienced what the atmosphere at Abshier Stadium in Deer Park was like and they understood the level of play they needed to get back to a regional final.

All of that led to the Spartans never being threatened in a 3-0 win over Clear Springs on Friday, clinching a berth in the regional final for the second straight season behind a strong offensive showing and a dominant display at the back where the Chargers never threatened.

“We know this field,” said junior forward Noa Stasic. “We’ve been here before and we’ve found ways to win. That gives us confidence and an edge. It was big for us to come in with that confidence and it showed all day.”

Seven Lakes dominated from early on, but chances were at a minimum for both teams. The Spartans took the lead in the 14th minute, when Noa Stasic headed in a goal off a cross to give Seven Lakes the advantage. They continued to be on the front foot and create chances, but were unable to get a second before halftime, as they led 1-0 going into the locker room. Aidan Morrison doubled the Spartans lead as they came out of the half in the 48th minute on a 28-yard free kick, giving Seven Lakes some cushion.

It was important for Seven Lakes to come out the way they did, and an improvement after games where they had slow starts and let teams stay in the game.

“What we talked about this week was leaving it all out there and not having any remorse,” said Seven Lakes head coach Jimmy Krueger. “Last week, there was a point where those guys felt some remorse and we do not want to revisit that even if we lose. But our guys competed well and they played right from start to finish, now it’s about recovering and being ready for tomorrow.”

The Spartans never let their foot off the gas and were rewarded again in the 60th minute as Kortay Koc got a pass in the box, dribbled around a defender and slotted home a goal. With a three-goal cushion the Spartans cruised to the final whistle for the win.

“We have three guys up front in me, Kortay and Hunter (Merritt) that can play all three positions and it just makes us all so hard to guard,” Stasic said. “We switch out, we pressure teams and a lot for them just can’t deal with that. It’s a big benefit for us because I can just go to the left and Kortay can go to the middle and it gives us something different. I don’t feel like there’s anyone that can really stop that right now.”

The Spartans advance to play the winner of Jordan and Dobie in the regional final 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Abshier Stadium, and the Spartans are as confident as they’ve been all year heading into it.

“We know what works for us and we just have to continue to do that,” Stasic said. “It’s all about keeping our heads down, putting the work in and coming out the right way for the game tomorrow. That’s how we continue to win.”
