“With a younger group like this you can always take lesson and learn things from every game, that’s how you get that experience is by getting those reps. We have things we can learn and we’ll be ready for it. But I’m so proud of these kids, they put in the work and we are in this position for a reason.”

Seven Lakes cinches share of fourth straight district title

Posted

It was a historic day for Seven Lakes on Friday.

The Spartans made history, clinching a fourth straight district title and securing a good seed out of District 19-6A heading into the playoffs, but the celebrations were muted, as a last second Cinco Ranch goal made it a 2-2 game and it ended in a tie, with Seven Lakes having sharing the district title with Jordan.

But it didn’t discount what this group has done or the historic achievement for the Spartans, as they used a surge in the second half of district play to secure their spot among the district leaders.

“I’m really proud of this group and I’m really proud of this program,” said Seven Lakes head coach Kaitlyn Eidson. “it’s been a journey and to get to four you have to get the first three and that’s a credit to those players that came before. This group stepped up when they had their chance this year and even when they faced adversity they kept fighting. I think that’s just going to keep helping us in playoffs.”

Neither team could gain an advantage in the first half, with Seven Lakes creating more opportunities but being unable to put the ball in the back of the net. The breakthrough for Seven Lakes came in the 48th minute, when Wagoner Towsen earned a free kick just outside of the 18-yard box. Towsen stepped up and hit a good free kick, which was saved but the ball came loose and fell to Lauren Hart, who tapped it in to the back of the net to give the Spartans the lead.

Seven Lakes added a second in the 57th minute when Sienna Marchitello, a call up from the JV squad, finished a low cross from Towsen, but Cinco worked its way back into things. Presley Payton latched on to a loose ball in the 62nd minute to make it a one goal game and then with just 17 seconds left Ambrye Fortune took a shot from deep and it sailed over the head of the Spartan goalkeeper and into the net, tying things and sending the Cougars into the offseason on a good note.

“As a coach I couldn’t be prouder,” said Cinco Ranch head coach Roger Ramirez. “We had ups and downs throughout the season, but the girls came out and they put it all out there and played hard, to be down like that and come back was a good result. Even when our captain got hurt the girls fought back from that and played hard. It was a big performance from them.”

The Spartans head into the playoffs trying to go on another dep run after making it to the third round in consecutive seasons. For them it’s all about moving forward, learning from the games behind them and being ready for whatever is in front of them.

“You learn from games and be stronger moving forward,” Eidson said. “With a younger group like this you can always take lesson and learn things from every game, that’s how you get that experience is by getting those reps. We have things we can learn and we’ll be ready for it. But I’m so proud of these kids, they put in the work and we are in this position for a reason.”
