Harris County Precinct 4 has announced a major infrastructure project in the northwest quadrant of the greater Katy area – bringing improvements to Porter Road, including street widening and drainage upgrades.
Construction is set to begin in June on the segment of Porter Road from Morton Road north to Clay Road, and is expected to be completed in June 2027, county officials said in a flyer about the project. The road will be widened from two to four lanes, and it will have dedicated left-turn lanes added at the following intersections: Avogadro Drive, Treviso Gardens Drive and Adriatic Drive, officials said in a subsequent email to the Katy Times on May 29. The intersection at Morton Road – which has already been widened --will remain in its current configuration.
Preparation for the project has already begun with removal of certain trees to accommodate the additional lanes and to improve mobility and safety for the community, including some at the headquarters of Katy Christian Ministries, 3506 Porter Road in Katy. “We prioritize the preservation of trees whenever possible,” a Harris County Precinct 4 spokesperson told the Katy Times. “We are currently evaluating potential opportunities to replace the removed trees with in-kind planting in the future.”
The initiative also includes improvements to drainage, converting the existing roadside ditches to an underground storm system. This project will bring drainage up to current standards, a spokesperson confirmed. The underground storm system is designed to handle approximately four inches of rain in 24 hours. (i.e., a two-year rain event), routing the stormwater from above ground to underground within the storm pipes and ultimately leading to a Harris County Flood Control District tributary. The scope calls for installing approximately 4500 linear feet of storm sewer improvements.
The team has been in communication with utility owners throughout the design of the project. “We do not anticipate major delays from the utility companies,” the spokesperson said.
During construction, drivers should prepare for lane shifts and narrowed lanes, as well as possible detours. Drivers are cautioned to slow down and follow posted signs and plan for extra travel time through the work zone, county officials said.
The next segment of rhe Porter Road expansion -- north of Clay Road -- is currently in design, a Precinct 4 spokesperson told the Katy Times. “We can provide an update after the design phase is completed in July 2027,” she said.
