“We’ve done that, now we don’t want to just make it to the playoffs,” Fobb said. “Now the goal is to just make it, we’re trying to go advance. We've got the team to do that.”

Angel Sonnier wanted to prove that Mayde Creek was better than their first game against Tompkins this season.
Sonnier missed the Rams first meeting with the Falcons, in which Tompkins ran away with a victory, but he was healthy and ready for the second go round and the Rams wanted revenge.
“We were fired up,” Sonnier said. “We knew what we had to come out and do to get a win in this game. It was important, we all together had an idea of what we wanted to do, it was just up to everyone to come out and get it done.”
Get it done the Rams did, as they topped a Tompkins team that was tied for the district 19-6A lead 55-48 behind 20 points from Sonnier.
“It was really huge for us,” said Mayde Creek head coach Anthony Fobb. “We knew last game that we didn’t have our most valuable player. Angel is a really valuable guys. You could see the leadership in the game he has out there and we didn’t have that the first time. This time around we just played our brand of basketball. When we do that we’re really hard to beat, we did that for 28 minutes tonight.”
Mayde Creek jumped on Tompkins early, and it led to a very tight quarter that the Falcons led 13-12 lead after the first. From there, Mayde Creek opened things up in the second, behind a terrific defensive effort, the Rams held the Falcons to eight points in the quarter while having five different players score in the quarter to take a commanding 30-18 lead heading into halftime.
“It’s taken a while but we’ve really started to come together,” said senior guard Larison Lamette. “At the beginning of the year, there was a lot of iso ball, but we’ve really corrected that and started to mesh now. We’re making the simple plays, moving the ball, sharing it and taking the right shots instead of just any shot.”
Tompkins did everything in their power to get back into the game in the third quarter, as Jason Clark reeled off eight straight points for the team, and the Falcons regained the lead for a time before a three-pointer at the quarter’s buzzer by Sonnier made it 40-38 Mayde Creek.
From there the Rams slowed the offense down and clamped down on defense, extending their lead in the fourth on the way to the win.
Sonnier was huge for the team while Lamette came away with 14 points and Caleb Davis was a huge difference maker with his rebounding and defense.
“The biggest thing for us was communication,” Sonnier said. “When they made that run, we took a timeout and it got us locked in. We started talking and making sure to match up with our man and get on them quicker. We got back on defense every possession and it made the difference.”
The win gives Mayde Creek a playoff berth for the fourth straight season. They are the only Katy ISD team to make the playoffs each of the past four years.
But that’s not enough for the program anymore, the goal isn’t to make the playoffs, but to win games once they get there.
“We’ve done that, now we don’t want to just make it to the playoffs,” Fobb said. “Now the goal is to just make it, we’re trying to go advance. We've got the team to do that.”
