Local entrepreneur Jacob Robinson just dug up a $200,000.00 investment by appearing on the ABC-TV series, “Shark Tank.”
Dig World, Katy’s own unique amusement park, was invited to appear on Shark Tank last year. The Sharks give budding entrepreneurs the chance to secure business deals that could make them millionaires, according to the program’s website.
Dig World is a construction-themed park located at Katy Mills Mall, 5000 Katy Mills Circle in Katy, where kids and adults can operate real construction equipment all year round.
Company founder Jacob Robinson traveled to Los Angeles to film the show. “It was a phenomenal experience. and the show was great from start to finish!” said a spokesperson for Robinson.
The episode aired March 14 on ABC.
“We secured a deal with Robert Herjavec,” said spokesperson Carly Hamilton in an interview with the Katy Times. “The other Sharks were optimistic about the business but felt for various reasons they were not the right fit. We are excited to be working with Robert! We believe he is the best fit.”
According to multiple media sources in the Houston area, Robinson secured a $200,000 investment by Herjavec in exchange for 10% of equity in Dig World.
Where does Dig World go from here?
“We are starting the franchise process,” said Hamilton. “We have already sold our first franchise in Dallas and close to selling a few more across the country.”
The unique park opened in March 2022 and has added various attractions since then, said a spokesperson for Dig World.
“We opened after COVID so that was not a factor for us,” said Hamilton. “We face challenges like any other start up -- growing pains, vendors, supply issues and many others...but we love working through those things to deliver a great product.”
Since opening, Dig World has had an educational partnership with Texas A&M and sees thousands of school-age kids on field trips every year. The park also has quarterly “Special Needs Nights” for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities and will hold the next one in April.
