Katy’s VFW post 9182 held its Katy Veteran’s Gala on May 8 at the Golf Club at Cinco Ranch – an evening filled with camaraderie, shared stories, meaningful traditions, and the opportunity to award honors to several students and community members.
“It was a night that reminded us of the bonds we build, the service we honor, and the community that continues to support one another,” the organization said in a subsequent post on Facebook.
The event at 23030 Cinco Ranch Blvd. began with the creation of a traditional grog, blended from various liquors representing different armed conflicts over the past century, from World War II to the Korean War and Viet Nam to the Middle East and beyond. Ingredients included whiskey, rum, tequila, beer and many other types of alcohol and – reportedly – gunpowder. Yes, people actually drank it.
The keynote speaker was 99-year-old World War II veteran Will Duvall, who shared stories about his military service and about his experience in the computer industry – including displaying his most recent invention.
Outgoing Post Commander Ruben Arriaga and outgoing quartermaster Heidi Arriaga were recognized for their contributions to the VFW over the past two years, with the presentation of a handmade “Quilt of Valor” to each.
The VFW 9182 Auxiliary $5000 scholarship was awarded to Claire Starke, a Katy High School graduate who will be attending Texas A&M in the fall. This scholarship is awarded yearly to a daughter, granddaughter, son, grandson of a veteran or military member.
Rohan Vinu, a senior at Seven Lakes High School who also plans to attend Texas A&M, and his younger brother each earned “Voice of Democracy” awards. Established in 1947, the Voice of Democracy audio-essay program provides high school students with the unique opportunity to express themselves through a democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay.
The award of commendation for civic contributions was presented to Katy Times publisher Susan Rovegno.
