The Katy ISD Board of Trustees has forever honored one of the district’s former leaders, voting Feb. 23 to name the new North Transportation Center for longtime Transportation Director William “Bill” Kyser, whose innovations transformed student transportation across Katy ISD.

Kyser served the district for more than 22 years, including more than two decades as director of transportation. During a period of rapid enrollment growth, he modernized Katy ISD’s bus fleet, introduced air-conditioned school buses and established routing and safety systems that became districtwide standards. His leadership strengthened efficiency, reliability and student safety for generations of Katy ISD families.

“Bill Kyser’s legacy is woven into the daily operations that keep our students safe and connected to learning,” Katy ISD Board President Lance Redmon said. “His forward-thinking leadership strengthened our transportation system during a critical period of growth, and naming this facility for him reflects the enduring impact he made on our District and community.”

A respected leader in Texas school transportation, Kyser mentored generations of drivers, mechanics and transportation staff. His emphasis on training, professionalism and student care helped establish Katy ISD’s transportation department as a model of operational excellence.

Part of the voter-approved 2021 Katy ISD Bond, the North Transportation Center is located at 25030 Longenbaugh Road in Katy, adjacent to the Youngblood Elementary and Freeman High School campuses. The facility joins three existing regional transportation centers in the district’s geographic quadrants to support safe, reliable and cost-effective transportation for Katy ISD’s more than 95,000 students.

The board considered the naming recommendation following recommendation by the School Naming Selection Committee and community input gathered through a public forum in February.
