Juneteenth events in Katy and Brookshire

The third annual Juneteenth celebration and museum wall honor event, sponsored by Ms. Cookie’s Corner is set for June 19 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Johnny Nelson Museum at 6002 George Bush Drive in Katy, according to a flyer distributed at a recent meeting of Katy’s city council. The day begins at 8 a.m. as riders saddle up for a ”Ride 4 Ms. Cookie” starting at 619 Danover Rd. in Katy which will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Riders may bring their own healthy happy horse to attend the ride and are responsible for their own “horse honey” clean-up. At the end of the ride, there will be a balloon release at 2 p.m. The festival features free food, festivities and music provided by neosoul artist and pianist MDS Maxim Dezine Studios. There will also be an exhibit “From Slaveship to Freedomship,” which includes slave artifacts. All are welcome to attend.

The African American Heritage Society presents its Juneteenth Parade on June 19 at 10 a.m. on Roberts Road between Pin Oak and Danover Road, leading to Woodsland Park at 441 Danover in Katy, where the society will sponsor its Juneteenth festival from 2 to 8 p.m. on June 19 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 20. The event is free.

In Brookshire, the Brookshire EDC will host a day of observances on June 19 beginning with a parade lineup at Brookshire Police Department at 5100 US 90 East in Brookshire, with the parade starting at noon. DJ Chose will serve as the grand marshal. From 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Amphitheater at 4029 5th St., there will be a family fun day featuring vendors and a kids zone. Shonegotti will provide musical entertainment. The day is capped off with a Gospel extravaganza and award ceremony at 6:30 p.m. at the convention center. Special guests are Men of Hope, and dinner will be served. The event will also feature a contest for students on “Why Is Juneteenth Important” and entries may be emailed to qdunn@brookshiretx.gov. Free to attend.
