Jordan falls to Dobie in hard fought regional semifinal

Posted

DEER PARK – Jordan nearly pulled it off again.

The Warriors fought and scraped and clawed their way back into a game, they found a way to tie it going into the final minutes as they tried to keep their season alive.

But this time the Warriors effort came up short, this time, they weren’t able to come away victors.

The Warriors season ended on Friday in the Class 6A Regional Semifinals with a 3-2 loss to Dobie, as Jordans playoff run ended in the fourth round with a last minute loss to the Longhorns, where the Warriors fought to the very end of their first season in Class 6A.

“I’m just so proud of what we did this year,” said senior center back Ben Bucic. “It was a true team effort, I can’t even explain it. This season was amazing and it’s all because of this family. I love each and every one of them.”

Jordan scored just over 30 seconds into the game, when the Dobie keeper couldn’t hang on to a ball in the box and it fell to Aiden Erol, who was able to just place it into the back of an empty net.

Jordan kept up the pressure for the first 15 minutes of the match, but Dobie found its way back into the game and started to create its own chances. It paid off for the Longhorns in the 21st minute, when Jordi Garcia scored a tap in off of a cross for Dobie to tie the game, and they kept up the pressure into the second half, getting another goal from a quick free kick that got jumbled into the box and fell to the feet of Alex Escobar, who volleyed it into the back of the net.

“These guys just wanted to compete,” said Jordan head coach Jason Meekins. “They really wanted to play and for it not to end. There was so much pressure, but they thrived in it every step of the way. That’s what we ended up doing all year. No one expected us to be here, but the coaches and players knew we could get here. We had a mentality that we would earn it. The kids did a great job, they’ve played nine playoff games in two years and not many programs can say that.”

Jordan upped the pressure after that, pushing the Dobie back line and tied the game in the 74th minute on Erol’s second goal of the day, but just two minutes later, Garcia got past the Jordan defense and put in a goal for Dobie as the Longhorns went back ahead, and they were able hang on for the win as Jordan was unable to answer in the final five minutes.

“Those guys, they play so hard and it’s something that’s just been built through offseason and the year," Meekins said. "They do it on a day in and day out basis, they play for each other and they hold each other to a higher standard. We have hiccups at times but they always leave everything on the field and they don’t want to let each other down.”

Jordan will graduate 14 seniors this season in their first ever senior class, and those seniors have laid the groundwork for a tremendous program, as they were part of teams that made the state semifinals in Class 5A last season and the regional tournament in Class 6A this season.

“We proved that it’s possible here at Jordan, the path is there, the underclassman just have to take that next step,” Bucic said. We set a legacy and a standard and hopefully the next guys can carry it forward. I know that they can.”
