ARLINGTON, Texas – The Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Year, Antoine Jean, stuck out six in 4.0 innings of relief work but the No. 11 seed Houston Baseball team dropped its Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship quarterfinal matchup to TCU 7-1 on Thursday at Globe Life Field.
Jean took his final exit in a Cougar uniform after striking out six in 4.0 innings and tempering the TCU offense which scored four runs in the second inning.
The Montreal, Canada, native finished his final collegiate season with 110 strikeouts in 67.0 innings with five wins and a 2.55 ERA becoming the first Cougar pitcher since 2021 to pitch to a triple crown.
Houston (30-25, 12-17 Big 12) got its first baserunner and recorded its first hit in the fifth inning off Horned Frogs starter Tommy LaPour who pitched 6.1 innings, allowed two hits and struck out six.
TCU (38-17, 19-11 Big 12) scored a run in the first inning, four in the second and one in the fourth.
Sophomore Xavier Perez added to his team leading RBI total when he drove in the Cougars lone run of the game in the ninth inning.
Perez finished the season leading the team in batting average (.305), RBI (48) and tied for home runs (9) to become the first Cougar hitter to fit for the triple crown in a full season since 2017.
Jean and Perez became the first Cougar duo to win the triple crown in the same season since Chris Snyder and Brad Sullivan in 2001.
