Harris Co. Precinct 4 expands free food programs for families during summer break

Harris County Precinct 4Commissioner Lesley Briones is expanding access to free, fresh food for families in need of reliable access to nutritious meals during the summer break. Nearly 40% of Harris County households are food insecure, significantly exceeding the national average of 14%, a spokesperson for the precinct said in a May 28 press release. “Precinct 4’s new food distribution programs will help fill the summer nutrition gap—meeting the needs of children who rely on free or reduced meals during the school year,” the release said. Through a partnership with Common Market, families who preregistered were able to receive a free box of locally sourced farm-fresh produce during May 28 distributions at the Radack Community Center, 18650 Clay Road in Houston and at other centers in the precinct. As of noon that day, all registration spots at Radack were full and there were 15 people on the waiting list. The Kids Cafe will offer summer meals at no cost to families at the Radack Center and the Weekley Community Center at 8440 Greenhouse Road in Houston from June 8 to August 14. The program is open to kids up to age 18 and the precinct’s website said that there were unlimited openings available, as of press time for this story. The nutritious meals are made possible by Harris County Precinct 4 partners and the Houston Food Bank.
