The REC Aerial Drone Competition “Mission 2025: Aerial Drone Competition Mission 2025: Gravity” was hosted by Harmony School of Excellence - Katy Middle/High School at 6300 Peek Road in Katy on December 14.


Harmony Public Schools high school, middle school and elementary school drone teams from all over the state participated in the event. It was the third annual district-wide drone competition for the charter school system.


REC is an initiative to provide students with a hands-on way to engage in STEM education (science, technology, engineering, and math) by working as a team to learn how to program and safely operate drones.


“At Harmony, we prepare students for their futures,” said a district spokesperson in a December press release. “And as the demand for drone pilots and technology grows, students who learn how to use drones while attending Harmony are positioning themselves for a myriad of opportunities in the future. By mastering the art of piloting drones, students are not only gaining valuable technical skills but also opening doors to potential careers in fields such as aerial mapping, surveying, disaster relief, and even drone technology development.”


The aerial drone competition events present opportunities for participants to hone their piloting and programming skills while working together as a team to beat their rivals. Events take place country-wide and throughout the year, with non-qualifying scrimmages and qualifying tournaments leading up to Aerial Drone Championship Events at the end of the season.
