UPDATED: Gas leak near Spring Green Kroger store closes portion of FM 1463


Update at 2:05 p.m. Jan. 13: 

The city of Katy has released a statement indicating that CenterPoint Energy has contained the gas leak and is continuing repairs. Residents who were evacuated may now return to their homes and both lanes of FM 1463 have been reopened. 

Update at 11:49 a.m. Jan. 13: 

Per the city of Katy, all of the businesses that were evacuated due to the gas leak have been allowed to reopen. Homes in the area have not yet received an all-clear. However, CenterPoint Energy has identified the location of the leak and has begun digging to perform necessary repairs.

A gas leak near the Kroger store on Spring Green Boulevard is affecting residents of the WoodCreek and Friethorne subdivisions according to statement from the city of Katy. FM 1463 is currently closed from Cane Island Parkway to Spring green Boulevard as a result.

“The Katy Fire Department is on scene monitoring air conditions. The Katy Police Department, Fort Bend County Sheriff, Fort Bend County Hazmat Team, and CenterPoint Energy are also on scene accessing the situation,” the city’s statement said.

Katy ISD Spokesperson Maria DiPetta confirmed that WoodCreek Elementary is currently sheltering in place to ensure student safety while the gas leak is addressed and repaired. Classes at the campus are ongoing at this time.

Readers are advised to avoid the area if possible.
