Fort Bend County Animal Services (FBCAS), a division of Fort Bend County Health and Human Services (FBCHHS), in partnership with the Fort Bend County Judge’s Office (FBCJO), announced on September 16 the launch of its first-ever Mobile Pet Adoption Unit, a state-of-the-art, custom-built vehicle designed to bring adoptable pets straight to the heart of the community.

The kick-off adoption event took place at Waggin’ Tails Pet Ranch, 7631 Katy Fulshear Rd., Fulshear, on Saturday, September 20.

Approved by Fort Bend County Commissioners Court on May 14, 2024, this new mobile adoption initiative has since been in development and is a highly anticipated major step forward in the County’s mission to increase adoptions, reduce overcrowding at the shelter, and connect with residents across the county — especially those in underserved or remote areas, county officials said.

“The unit is designed as a dynamic rolling extension of our brick-and-mortar shelter,” said Rene Vasquez, Director of Fort Bend County Animal Services. “By bringing the Mobile Pet Adoption Unit directly to schools, parks, and community events, we’re not just offering pets a greater chance at a new home — we’re delivering joy, hope and lifelong companionship right to the heart of our community.”

Built on a 26-foot Ford E-450 chassis and fully outfitted by Magnum Mobile Specialty Vehicles, the Mobile Adoption Unit can safely and comfortably transport up to 21 adoptable pets. The glass-fronted enclosures offer passersby a window to the hopeful pets within, where a shared glance or a gentle paw can spark a connection that may blossom into a forever home. The climate-controlled environment, secure storage and veterinary-ready features allow for both adoption and wellness services like microchipping and vaccinations.

Key Benefits of the Mobile Unit:

• Increase visibility for long-stay and overlooked animals

• Provide on-the-spot adoptions at local events

• Help relieve shelter overcrowding

• Offer mobile vaccinations and microchipping

• Expand outreach to underserved communities

In addition to adoptions, the unit will provide public education, health services, and engagement opportunities throughout the year. Adoption fees remain accessible, ranging from $10 to $80, and often include waived or discounted pricing during community events. All adopted animals are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped.

Fort Bend County Animal Services encourages residents to get involved by adopting, fostering, volunteering and/or donating. More information, including the mobile unit’s event schedule, will be available on the FBCAS website at www.fortbendcountytx.gov/government/departments/health-and-human-services/animal-servicesand social media channels.
