Embattled County Judge KP George has been arrested and jailed on charges of money laundering, according to reports in multiple media outlets in the Houston area.
The county's top elected official faces two indictments accusing him of "criminal activity, namely wire fraud," and "tampering with governmental record" in the form of a campaign finance report, according to the Houston Chronicle story on April 5. The indictments allege that both charges were committed with "intent to defraud or harm," the Chronicle story said
Houston Public Media, citing county jail records and the district attorney’s office, reported April 4 that George is accused of laundering equal to or more than $30,000 but less than $150,000, and that, according to court records, the money laundering charges are connected to alleged wire fraud and tampering with a campaign finance report. Money laundering is a third-degree felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison, the news outlet said on its website, houstonpublicmedia.org. The new charges follow on the heels of George’s indictment in September 2024 on a misdemeanor charge of misrepresentation of identity. At that time he was accused of working with former staffer Taral Patel to create fake racist attacks on social media against his own campaign.
George’s office issued the following statement on Friday evening, April 4 to media outlets including the Katy Times:
“As an elected official, I have always operated with integrity and transparency. Let me be absolutely clear—there is nothing illegal about loaning personal funds to my own campaign and later repaying that loan. This is a standard and lawful practice.
Unfortunately, this is a continued example of Fort Bend County District Attorney’s office weaponizing the government with an obvious political witch hunt period. Allegations and accusations are being made without full context or disclosure of the facts—deliberately manipulating the narrative to tarnish my reputation and character.
I have full confidence that the truth will prevail, in the meantime, I remain committed to serving and fighting for the people of Fort Bend County with the same passion and dedication as always.”
