Fort Bend County installs first HAWK signal near site of 2023 pedestrian fatality

The HAWK signal on Mason Rd is now active, according to a Facebook post by Fort Bend County Precinct 1 Commissioner Vincent Morales on October 4. “Please use caution at this crossing,” Morales said in his post. “The other two locations, Westheimer Pkwy near Williams Elementary School and Fry Rd near Beck Junior High, will be up and running soon. My office and Fort Bend County Engineering will be assessing other locations of high pedestrian activity to determine if future HAWK signals are warranted.”

The HAWK signal on Mason is at the Buffalo Bayou Bridge near the Ballard House and Creech Elementary.

In 2023 a driver was arrested and charged after Logan Dark, 14, was hit by a vehicle as he rode his bike in the early, the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office said. Dark, a freshman at Cinco Ranch High School, did not survive.

While Morales’ office did not provide an estimate of the cost of the HAWK signals, the estimated cost for a HAWK signal installation ranges from $80,000-$150,000, depending on the specific design elements included, such as pavement markings, lighting, raised pedestrian islands and other factors, according to rasmith.com, the website for a Wisconsin-based engineering firm that has installed signals in that state.
