City grants annexation for 54 acres in Fort Bend County, approves special use permit for former hospital site on Kingsland

In a short meeting on May 11, the City of Katy’s city council approved a petition for annexation by Katy Gaston Investment Inc. and CKNM Business Inc. for over 54 acres in Fort Bend County. The land will be used exclusively for commercial development and will not have residences -- either single family homes or apartments, city officials said. The area was also designated as a “planned development district,” which will allow the city to have stricter controls on what is allowed there, City Planner Rachel Lazo told council.

Council also approved a special use permit for Oasis Senior LLC, a convalescent home which will occupy the site of a former hospital at 25660 Kingsland Blvd. in Katy. The project has been in the works since 2019, according to previous reporting in the Katy Times. Jeffrey Reich-Hale, who has previously served as the marketing director for the project, spoke briefly to council and said that the facility would probably begin accepting residents by mid-July and that a ribbon-cutting ceremony was being planned. Reich-Hale did not respond to requests from the Katy Times for additional information.

In other action, the mayor issued the following proclamations:

· Recognizing May 2026 as Older Americans Month (read by Councilmember Gina Hicks)

· Recognizing May 2026 as Foster Care Month (read by Mayor Pro Tem Chris Harris)

· Recognizing May 10-16 as National Police Week (read by Mayor Dusty Thiele)

· Recognizing May 17-23 as National EMS Week (read by Councilmenber Janet Corte)

· Recognizing May 18-22 as Texas Flood Awareness Week (read by Councilmember Paula Taylor)

The May 25 meeting of city council has been cancelled due to the Memorial Day holiday; the next meeting of council will be June 8 at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 901 Avenue C in Katy.
