“One of the biggest goals and what I think we all want to do is win district. There’s other things I want to do. I want to pass the all-time scoring record at Cinco, I want to break some other records and I want to beat certain teams. But it all starts with winning district."

Aniya Foy has achieved a lot of accolades in her four years at Cinco Ranch.
The senior has already broken the single game points record for the Cougars, she’s on her way to breaking the all-time scoring record for the school and she has led Cinco Ranch to the playoffs in each of her three full seasons.
But there is still more for the senior to accomplish. More she wants to do and things that make her hungry going into her senior year.
For one, while the Cougars have made the playoffs in each of her three years with the team, they haven’t been able to finish above fourth in District 19-6A in those years. It’s something that has made Foy motivated, made both Foy and her teammates want to prove themselves and show the entire district that they are one of the premier teams in Katy ISD.
“One of the biggest goals and what I think we all want to do is win district,” Foy said. “There’s other things I want to do. I want to pass the all-time scoring record at Cinco, I want to break some other records and I want to beat certain teams. But it all starts with winning district, and that’s the main focus right now.”
Even more than that, Foy wants to take this team further than it has gone with her on the roster this year. For all their accomplishments, Cinco Ranch has lost in the bi-district round each of the last three years, but each year has gotten closer to getting a win.
Foy’s freshman year, the team lost to Austin by double digits, but her sophomore year the Cougars gave Hightower a tough game. Last season, even coming in as the fourth seed, Cinco Ranch nearly took down Hightower, taking the Hurricanes to overtime but eventually losing by four.
“We want to come out every game and show people who we are,” said Cinco Ranch head coach LeVar Brown. “That is the goal every time we come out, especially against these good teams that may have beaten us last year or are striving to win a district championship. We have to show them what we are capable of.”
Cinco has started this year hot. They currently sit at 8-2 on the year and started district by beating last year’s co-district champ Seven Lakes without much of a hassle. Foy has been a huge part of that, averaging over 26 points per game while shooting over 54% from the field. The team has unlocked her by playing Foy off the ball, making defenses uncomfortable with the way she is able to get open and also create opportunities for her teammates with her gravity.
“It makes the defense think and have to figure out what is going on,” Brown said. “When they are doing that it makes things even easier for our other players and that’s an important thing. It can’t only be Aniya and I think we have pieces to compliment her this year.”
Now the goal for Cinco is to string those wins together and continue to build momentum. With the thick of district play coming up, it will begin to be a grind if they want to climb to the top, but Foy thinks the team is ready.
“You can already see everyone getting better on the team,” Foy said. “From the time we started to now, the whole team has continued to grow, create better habits and worked on the things we were struggling with at the beginning. It was rocky to start but everyone has bought in, we are getting better and the sky is the limit.”
