Katy ISD had two teams placed in the top 10 of this years Teas Girls Coaches Association Class 6A Preseason Poll.

The two top teams from the district last year were represented. Both Cinco Ranch and Seven Lakes earned spots in the top five after being the top teams in Class 6A-Region III last year.

Cinco Ranch was ranked third overall and Seven Lakes was ranked fifth heading into the season, while Grand Oaks took the top spot in the poll.

Cinco comes off a district championship and a state final appearance. The Cougars had a undefeated district season and rolled through the playoffs, only dropping four sets in their first six games. Cinco won 3-1 over Harlan in its state semifinal game but fell 3-0 in the state final against Grand Oaks.

The Cougars bring back some of the most important players from last years team. Senior setter Kassie O’Brien is one of the top prospects in the Houston area, Gabby Martinez is as well and players like Nicole Terman, Magdalene Finnegan, Abby Borchardt and Addison Goertz will all be impact players for Cinco this year as they look to repeat their success and go one step further.

Seven Lakes was ranked fifth overall and comes off a year where they got hot at the perfect time heading into the postseason and went on a huge run.

The Spartans finished third in District 19-6A last year, only losing to the teams who finished first and second in Cinco Ranch and Tompkins and then went on a huge run in the playoffs to reach the Region III-6A Final. Seven Lakes swept Fort Bend Austin in bi-district before outlasting Stratford in five sets in the second game in district. They kept things going by beating Tompkins three sets to one in the third round and then swept Deer Park in the Regional Semifinals before falling to Cinco in the Regional Final.

The Spartans will have tons of talent at their disposal as they try to make another run. Megan Chapman will be a focal point heading into her junior year and is a tremendous player, while Gracie Hobin, Heidi Wingate and Kate Avery Kuehn will be huge parts of the team this year.

Those two aren’t the only ones in Katy ISD vying for top spots though and all of district play will be must watch as the teams battle it out.
