As a centenarian, Carriage Inn resident Rosa Lee (Brumley) Hankey has accomplished quite a bit in her lifetime. But on June 16, she’ll reach an impressive milestone that few have the privilege of celebrating—her 106th birthday.
Hankey, who was born on June 16, 1919, in rural Oklahoma, spent her early years growing up on a farm without electricity. She lived through the Great Depression and graduated from Southeastern Oklahoma College in 1939. Hankey married her high school sweetheart, Lowell Hankey, in 1941, and shortly after they were married, he spent four years away in Europe fighting for our country during World War II.
After the war, Hankey and her husband raised one daughter and built a life together teaching school and farming near their hometown of Caddo, Oklahoma. In 2006, following the passing of her husband of 65 years, Hankey moved to Katy to reside closer to her family and to Carriage Inn, the senior living community she has called her home for 19 years.
Hankey continues to enjoy a variety of activities, especially playing the piano and painting, both of which were self-taught hobbies. She also enjoys reading, writing poetry, and studying her Bible.
When asked about the source of her longevity, she simply said, “Do as the Bible says and honor your father and mother.” Carriage Inn will honor Rosa Lee with a birthday party on June 13.
