Long-time Katy resident and perennial volunteer Brenda Hunter Martin was honored by the City of Katy as the “2024-2025 Senior Volunteer of the Year” in two separate ceremonies on June 9.

The honor was officially bestowed at a reception at the Fussell Senior Citizen Center, 5370 E. Fifth Street in Katy, by City of Katy Social Services Director Amanda Di Dio. The decision to choose Martin as the volunteer of the year was unanimous, which is a rare occurrence, Di Dio said.

“We are honored to recognize Brenda Martin for her incredible dedication and impact in our community,” Di Dio said. “She doesn’t just show up – she gives it her all. She doesn't wait to be asked.”

The reception was attended by Mayor Dusty Thiele, Mayor Pro Tem Chris Harris and Councilmember Rory Robertson, along with members of Martin’s family and many friends and supporters.

The event was followed by recognition at the June 9 meeting of Katy’s city council at City Hall, 901 Avenue C in Katy, with the reading of a proclamation recognizing Martin’s achievements.

Martin’s volunteer journey includes, but is in no way limited to:

· Supporting Relay for Life since 2012

· Honored by Harris County 2025 “Women in History”

· Awarded 2020-2021 Katy Junior High Texas PTA Honorary Life Membership

· Girl Scout Troop Leader

· Champion of the Milk4Many Program at Katy Elementary, by donating unused milk to Katy Christian Ministries

· Active member of the Katy Heritage Society

· Proud member of the City of Katy Fussell Senior Citizen Center

· Volunteer for the Re-elect Dusty Thiele for Mayor Campaign

“All of these causes touch my heart,” Martin said in accepting the award.
