A dedication ceremony planned for Katy’s 10th Street bridge on April 24 was postponed by the city.
“Due to inclement weather, the 10th Street Bridge Project Dedication has been postponed,” said a statement from the city late in the day on April 24, the day of the event. “A new date has not been announced yet, but we will share the updated information as soon as it becomes available.”
While the planned ceremony was a “dedication” event and not an official opening event, it was set to mark a “key milestone in the journey,” according to the original event invitation. A brief program and photo opportunity was scheduled, along with remarks from Mayor Dusty Thiele and other city, county, and state officials. The ceremony was set to honor a partnership between the City of Katy and the General Land Office, which helped fund the project.
The $2.88 million bid for the project was originally approved by city council on April 22, 2024. The original scope was to include bridge and retaining wall construction, channel improvements, grading and storm sewer and water line installations. Council also approved a $99,250 construct for construction management and inspection services of the project with ARKK Engineers.
The 10th Street bridge was scheduled to be closed beginning mid-July 2024 through January 2025 for the construction. At the January 27 meeting of city council, members authorized the mayor to sign a construction change order, extending the completion date by an additional 88 days. City Engineer David Kasper said at that time that the project would be completed in April.
In a reply to an April 23 post on the City of Katy Residents Forum Facebook page, Mayor Pro Tem Chris Harris said that he had talked to the city engineer earlier in the week and that the project was “definitely not ready,” stating that “they are looking at late next month.”
