As families settle into the school year, the YMCA of Greater Houston is announcing its fall programs, where kids will find new interests, build meaningful friendships and develop lifelong skills. “Whether through youth sports, enrichment programs or adaptive programs, the YMCA of Greater Houston continues to be a safe, supportive place where youth grow with confidence and purpose, and families feel even more connected to one another and their community,” said an organization spokesperson in a September 3 press release.

“We offer opportunities so that every child has the chance to pursue their dreams while building lasting bonds,” said Stephen Ives, president and CEO, YMCA of Greater Houston. “As we deepen our impact in Houston, our aim is for youth to discover their potential, families to deepen connections, and everyone to find a place where they truly belong. We’ll continue to be a place of purpose that supports busy families by providing innovative, enriching, accessible programming that meets everyone where they are.”

From scoring goals in youth sports to discovering new passions in enrichment programs, there’s something for every child and every schedule. Below is what’s happening this fall: · Enrichment Programs – Varying by location, enrichment programs for youth and adults, spark growth and confidence through movement and imagination. From flying over ninja-style obstacle courses or coding a game, every experience encourages lifelong learning by:

o Empowering movement and agility: Roller skating, youth strength and conditioning, tumbling, and cheer inspire kids to move, boosting coordination and confidence in the process.

o Cultivating focus, respect and strength: Participants of all ages develop respect and a strong sense of self through training in martial arts.

o Creating moments for creative play: Theatre, dance, pottery, and culinary arts offer opportunities to express yourself on and off the stage.

o Enriching STEM and strategy programs: Lego builders, robotics/youth coding, STEM explorers, and chess programs challenge young minds to problem-solve.

o Outdoor adventure and bold discovery: Opportunities to connect with nature through archery and a rock wall encourage teamwork and exploration.

o Academic support: Complete homeschool PE activities, sharpen study habits, and stay on track with programs designed to support learning in subjects. · Youth Sports – Youth sports help kids build confidence, practice teamwork and stay active. Children ages 3–13 can participate in sports such as basketball, soccer, volleyball, and flag football, including

the Houston Texans NFL Flag League for ages 4-14. Through leagues, clinics, and academy programs, youth receive age-appropriate instruction that teaches sportsmanship, resilience and life skills. · Early care and after school childcare – At Early Care, the experienced staff welcomes children from 6 weeks to 5 years of age into a welcoming, loving, and educational environment at the YMCA’s early learning childhood center. Programs are licensed by the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services, Child Care Licensing. Contact a Children’s Academy location closest to you for more information. After school childcare serves 4,200 children ages 5–12 daily across approximately 140 sites in 15 Houston-area districts and charter schools. YMCA After School Care offers a balance of academic support, enrichment, and social-emotional learning. Housed in local schools and some YMCA centers, YMCA After School Care gives children opportunities for active play, creative projects and hands-on learning with their homework. Kids take part in structured activities that reinforce academic concepts while fostering empathy, inclusion and service learning. · Adaptive programs – The YMCA of Greater Houston’s adaptive programs provide children and adults with disabilities the opportunity to play sports, regardless of their ability, in a safe and accessible environment. Participants can enjoy sports activities like Miracle League Baseball, swimming, and sports clinics, which are all led by trained staff who help players in drills and games designed to challenge and develop gross motor skills, all while having fun with friends. · Swim programs –With swim lessons available year-round and open to all ages, students can learn water safety skills, build basic swim stroke techniques, and foster a lifetime of physical activity. · Y Teen L.I.F.E – Y Teen L.I.F.E. (Leadership, Inspiration, Fellowship and Education) helps middle and high school-age students foster a culture of service, teaching them how to set goals and share their voice.

The YMCA of Greater Houston offers financial assistance for eligible families to participate in their programs, including childcare, camps, and memberships, ensuring accessibility for all. To apply, families should visit their local Y location to discuss options.
