Why Choose Public Schools?

As a parent, there’s one question that can keep you up at night: Is my child in the learning environment that truly grows them?

That question comes from a good place. You know your child better than anyone. You see their strengths, their worries, their quirks, and their dreams. Of course, you want a school environment that truly fits who they are.

As both a superintendent and father myself, I want you to know something important: choosing public school doesn’t mean settling for the “standard.” In Katy ISD, it means choosing from more options than many families realize exist under one roof.

Public schools are sometimes seen as a “one-size-fits-all,” leaving families with little choice. That’s not the reality in our district. We serve more than 95,000 students across 80 campuses, meeting each one where they are academically, socially, and emotionally, and our students are provided a world-class education every day in our schools.

Public schools build communities, not consumers. In Katy ISD, our schools anchor neighborhoods, serve as community hubs, teach civics and democratic values, unite families from diverse backgrounds, build character, and cultivate a shared responsibility for one another and our future.

Yes, outcomes matter. You want to know your child will be challenged and prepared for the future. Katy ISD has been ranked the #1 public school district in the Houston area by Niche for five consecutive years. Our students consistently outperform state and regional averages, post SAT scores above national benchmarks, and earn recognition as National Merit semifinalists and finalists. We’re also known for strong financial accountability, which means taxpayer resources are deployed directly into classrooms and student support.

But if you’re like most parents, test scores aren’t the only thing on your mind.

You’re also wondering: Will my child be known here? Will someone notice if they’re struggling? Will they feel like they belong?

Public schools are the only system designed to serve every child. In our elementary schools, certified teachers use small-group instruction and targeted interventions to make sure students build strong foundations. Support at our secondary campuses comes through tutoring, advisory

periods, and direct access to teachers who know their students well. Learning should be challenging, yes, but it should also be supportive. That balance is where growth happens.

While academic success is what Katy ISD is known for, parents should also know about how Katy ISD teaches core values found in our Instructional Cornerstones. Every day, embedded in our curriculum, we teach students fundamental, lifelong skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, communication, problem solving and how to contribute to our community.

And if your child needs something outside the “traditional” path, public school may offer more flexibility than you think.

For advanced learners, we offer a wide array of Honors and Advanced Placement courses. For students who need specialized services, we provide robust programs for children with disabilities and for those learning English as a second language. This year, we’re launching Legacy Virtual High School, an online option that gives families flexibility while keeping students connected to our teachers, curriculum, and extracurricular opportunities. Some students thrive in traditional classrooms; others need a different structure. Both belong here.

Then there’s the question many parents don’t ask soon enough: What if my child’s success doesn’t look like a traditional four-year college path?

From career and technical education at our Miller Career & Technology Center and high schools, to deeply enriching fine arts and athletics across the district, our campuses open doors to possibility. With more than 40 career pathways ranging from health sciences and engineering to culinary arts and skilled trades, students gain industry certifications, hands-on experience, and a clear line of sight to high-demand careers. In studios, labs, and on fields and stages, they build confidence, discipline, teamwork, and purpose, discovering not just what they can do, but who they are becoming.

Parents also ask about class sizes, safety and belonging, and they should. As our community grows, we adjust class sizes based on student needs, hire top tier teachers, and provide additional classroom support so students receive meaningful attention. Every campus has counselors, safety teams, and clear protocols designed to protect both physical and emotional well-being. School isn’t just about academics; it’s about connection, confidence, and finding a place to belong.

School choice is personal. It’s about finding an environment where your child will grow not just academically, but as a whole person. My hope is that as you weigh your options, you take a fresh look at what your Katy public schools already offer. You may find that the right fit for your child has been right here all along.
