Katy area residents have about two weeks to apply for Federal Emergency Management Agency or U.S. Small Business Administration assistance if they were impacted by Winter Storm Uri, according to a press release from FEMA. The deadline for those who were impacted by the unprecedented winter storm is May 20.

Those who were uninsured or underinsured against the damages caused by the winter storms may apply for aid at www.disasterassistance.gov or call 800-621-3362. Phone lines are open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

Applicants should gather the following information prior to applying:

• Current phone number or other contact information.
• Address at the time of the disaster and current address, if different.
• Social Security Number.
• A general list of damages and losses caused by the storm.
• If insured, the insurance policy number or the agent and company name.

After registration, FEMA staff may contact applicants to request additional information or clarifications.

Those not fully covered by insurance may be eligible for SBA loans. These low-interest loans are available to non-farm businesses – including rental properties – as well as homeowners and renters whose property was damaged as the result of the storm.

Homeowners may apply for SBA loans of up to $200,000 to replace or repair their primary residence. Renters and homeowners may borrow up to $40,000 to replace or repair personal property such as clothing, furniture, cars and appliances damaged or destroyed in a disaster.

Private businesses and nonprofit organizations may receive up to $2 million in SBA loans for repair or replacement of the following:

• Real property.
• Machinery.
• Fixtures.
• Inventory.
• Leasehold improvements.

Fort Bend, Harris and Waller county residents are eligible to apply under disaster declarations at the local, state and federal levels.
