Tompkins rolls past Morton Ranch, sit alone at second in district

Posted

Tompkins has learned a lot about themselves in the past few weeks.

After losing games to Seven Lakes and Cinco Ranch earlier in their district schedule, the Falcons have taken things to another gear in their past three games.

The Falcons have scored 50 or more in each of their last three while outscoring their opponents 180 to 132.

“Those two games taught our players that they have to follow the gameplan,” said Tompkins head coach Tammy Ray. “We just didn’t execute our gameplan to the level that we needed to execute it against either one of those two teams. They were both really good basketball teams and when it gets to that point, you can’t slack off with the gameplan. Thankfully they’ve learned from it.”

Tompkins has continued to get better since those losses and that continued on Friday, when the Falcons ran past Morton Ranch 63-35 to improve to 29-3 on the year and 7-2 in District 19-6A play.

It was a slow start for Tompkins, but the Falcons picked things up quickly and made adjustments after leading 19-14 after the first quarter.

“Coach Ray told us that we had good energy to start and Morton just played well,” said junior guard Macy Spencer. “They came out angry but we came out ready to fight. We wanted this one, we want the next one, so we’re just working hard and doing what we can.”

Tompkins turned around their slow start quickly, and built a 31-21 lead heading into halftime that ballooned into a 20 point lead after the third quarter.

“Those two losses earlier in district motivated us,” Spencer said. “We knew we had to do better. We’ve worked harder in practice, we’ve kept the energy up. Coach (Todd) McVey brought some of his football guys in and they help us with the energy and everything. It’s been really good.”

Spencer helped lead the way by scoring 30 points, her third straight game of scoring more than 20 points.

“She’s allowing me to coach the heck out of her,” Ray said. “She’s very receptive to coaching and teaching. She lets us coach her and that’s a testament to her. It’s hard to take that type of criticism. But she does and it’s made her better. We try to just let the offense come to her and it’s paid off.”

The Falcons have three more games remaining in their district schedule and the district is still wide open for any team to win.

The most important game thus far will come on Tuesday when Tompkins plays Seven Lakes.

“We really want that one,” said senior guard Brooklynn Nash. “We have to focus on boxing out better, locking down their shooters, making sure that we talk on defense and tell each other exactly what we’re doing, and we have to lockdown No. 30 (Justice Carlton). We do those things we can come out with a win.
