Friday was the deadline for candidates to file to run for municipal and school board seats in the Katy area.

The election is May 7.

Here is a rundown of who has filed for municipal or school district offices.

Katy mayor

Dusty Thiele, an insurance executive, drew no opponents as he seeks to succeed incumbent Mayor Bill Hastings, who is retiring after one term in office.

In a social media post, Thiele thanked his  family, friends and community members for  their support.  He will take office in May.

Thiele has twice served on the council. In November 2020, Hastings appointed Thiele to serve out the term of Ward A Council Member Frank Carroll, who had resigned that post. Thiele did not seek election in his own right to that seat. Dan Smith holds that seat today.

Thiele previously lived in Ward B and had a similar council experience there. In 2013, then-Mayor Don Elder Jr. appointed Thiele to serve in the Ward B seat held by then-Council Member Fabol Hughes, who resigned to seek and win the mayoralty. Thiele served the remainder of Hughes’s term but did not seek election that year. Gina Hicks holds that seat today.

Hastings decided in December to retire after one term in office, which expires in May. Term of office is three years.

Katy Independent School District Board of Trustees

The position 1 and position 2 seats are on this year’s ballot. Both incumbents have filed to seek re-election. Both have drawn multiple challengers.

Position 1 incumbent Duke Keller, a lawyer, has drawn four challengers. Victor Perez is retired. Cicely Taylor is an educator. Saki Krishnamurthy is an engineer and executive. Eliz Markowitz is an educator.

Position 2 incumbent Lance Redmon, who works in industrial sales, has drawn two challengers. Bonnie Anderson is an IT manager. Patricia Haggard is a stay-at-home parent.

Both Keller and Redmon were first elected in 2019. Term of office is three years.

Brookshire City Council

Alderman positions 3, 4 and 5 are on this year’s ballot.

Position 3 incumbent Kim Branch has filed for re-election. Branch will face Shirley Williams, who is retired.

Position 4 incumbent Lee Nelson Jones, a school employee, has filed for re-election. Jones will face Amanda Neuendorf, a teacher.

Position 5 incumbent Eric Green, a field operations manager, has filed for re-election. He will face two challengers. Jeremiah Hill is a consultant. Ruth Abagail Rodriguez is an administrative professional.
