Texans ink Collins to three-year extension

Posted

One of the biggest weapons in Houston is now locked up long term.

The Texans and Nico Collins agreed to a three-year, $72.75 million contract extension after a career year for the 25-year old in the 2023-24 season.

Three year deal will include $52 million guaranteed, making Collins the seventh highest paid receiver in the NFL.

Collins comes off a year where he had 80 catches for 1,297 yards and eight touchdowns. He was top 10 in the league in both yards and touchowns while he was top 25 in receptions. The fourth year pro had five game with over 100 yards receiving during his breakout season becoming one of the best young receivers in the league in the process.

A third round pick in 2021, Collins deal was going to expire after the 2024-25 season and it was a top priority for the Texans to keep him around for longer this offseason.

Houston will have one of the best and deeper wide receiver rooms in the league next year. Earlier in the offseason the Texans traded for Stefon Diggs, a two time all-pro and four-time pro bowl selection. Houston also traded for Joe Mixon this offseason, bolstering an offense that already had strong pass catchers in Collins, Tank Dell and Dalton Schultz. All except for Diggs are locked up for multiple years as well.

Houston will hope that with a long-term contract, Collins will reward them with more strong healthy years. The receiver only played in 10 games in 2022 but bounced back with his healthiest season as a pro in 2023 where he had those career highs. His productivity helped CJ Stroud to a historic rookie campaign, where the No. 2 overall pick threw for 4,108 yards and 23 touchdowns to just five interceptions with a passer rating of 100.8. And it’s fair to say the quarterback was excited that Collins will be around for the long haul.
