Posted

On September 8, Jenika Patel, a sixth grade student at Stockdick Junior High School, was recognized by local American Legion Auxiliary Unit 164 Katy in an award ceremony at the campus at 4777 Peek Road in Katy. After Jenika submitted an essay on the topic "What America Means to Me regarding Veterans and the military" last spring, her entry was chosen the winner in her fifth and sixth grade group by ALA Unit 164 of Katy.

Her essay was then forwarded to the ALA Department of Texas, where it was chosen by the Americanism Committee as the state winner. Jenika received a certificate, plaque and $50 gift card for winning at the state level. Her essay has now been sent on to National Committee for consideration, said Linda Malsbury, Education Chairman for ALA Department of Texas in a statement to the Katy Times.

This essay program is open to all students from the third grade through high school. The current essay theme is “Celebrating America’s 250th Birthday and the Veterans who Fought for Our Freedom.” For more information on the essay contest, its deadlines and how to enter, please email info@legionpost164katytx.org or call 832-549-9501.
