Sheriff’s office warns of phone scams

Posted

The Austin County Sheriff’s Office has received phone calls regarding various scams.

The department recommends people be aware of phone calls requesting money. Government and law enforcement agencies will not call asking for money. Be cautious of people requesting money to be sent using pre-paid money cards. That is a scam. Your personal information can be obtained from the internet by scammers who may contact you by phone. Hang up on suspicious phone calls.

To help combat phone scams, the department recommends people register their phone number with the National Do Not Call Registry by calling 1-888-382-1222. After registering, if you continue to receive unsolicited calls, there is a good chance those calls are scams. Remember to protect your personal information.
