Katy-area residents remembered American service members who died in service to the nation during Memorial Day ceremonies held Monday.

Katy’s traditional remembrance ceremony happened Monday morning at Katy Magnolia Cemetery, 6801 Franz Road.

“It gives me that small town feeling, and people even comment on it because it has become such a community-focused event in honoring our veterans who have lost their lives,” Council Member-at-Large and Mayor Pro Tem Chris Harris said. “It feels like it’s time when the entire community comes together and there’s always a big crowd there. They come together and honored veterans who lost their lives.”

Harris said the ceremony, which featured a 21-gun salute, draws from both inside and outside Katy.

“People travel from all over the area to it,” Harris said. “Hats off to the VFW and the American Legion for putting it together. It’s truly a traditional ceremony and it’s a beautiful event.”

In Fort Bend County. County Judge KP George hosted a Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony at the Historic Fort Bend County Courthouse.

The program began with an invocation delivered by Tim Krugh, chaplain of Milton Brenner VFW Post 3903 in Rosenberg. Following the invocation, Ken Dillon, post commander, gave an address describing the significance of Memorial Day, reminding attendees of the gratitude owed to those who gave their lives defending America’s freedom.

Dwight Marshall, Fort Bend County veterans service manager, acknowledged the veterans in attendance, recognizing their dedication and selflessness in protecting our nation. The event also saw the participation of Sienna Scout Troop 140 and Sienna Cub Scout Pack 1402, who presented the colors and led the Pledge of Allegiance.

The Fort Bend County Honor Guard performed a 21-gun salute, followed by the solemn Laying of the Wreaths. The ceremony concluded with a poignant rendition of Taps performed by Gilberto B. Guerrero, a member of the All Glory Honor Guard from Milton Brenner VFW Post 3903.

George honored Robert J. Fagan, a 100-year-old World War II veteran, for his invaluable service to the country. His dedication and sacrifice were recognized as a testament to the spirit of the American soldier. Additionally, Air Force veteran Frank Cempa was acknowledged for his service.

“Memorial Day is a solemn occasion where we reflect upon the sacrifices made by our servicemen and women, who fought bravely to uphold the values we hold dear,” George said. “We owe deep gratitude to all veterans and their families that is why it is important to remember and honor their legacy.”

In Brookshire, officials gathered for a remembrance ceremony held at the amphitheater on 5th Street.
