Nevelynn Jean Melendy, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and longtime resident of Katy, Texas, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2025, at the age of 90.
She was married to Jere Melendy, the love of her life, until his passing in 2006. Together, they built a life of love, faith, and service.
Nevelynn was preceded in death by her parents, Lillian Peteete Foreman and Chester Foreman, and her sister, LaJuan Foreman Melendy.
She is survived by her children, William Melendy, Wesley Melendy, and Patti Melendy; grandchildren, Justin Melendy, Daulton Melendy (Nicole Melendy), Kyla Henderson (Garrett Henderson), and Derrick Godley; and great-grandchildren, Madeline, Lily Anne, Charlotte, Miles, Luke, Travis, Kolby, and Hadley. Her legacy of love, strength, and dedication will live on in all who knew her.
A devoted member of Katy United Methodist Church, Nevelynn lived her faith through service. She was a Sunday school teacher, choir member, and longtime leader of the church’s Home Delivered Meals program, ensuring those in need received nourishment and kindness.
Nevelynn also made a lasting impact professionally. As Director of Handicapped Services for the Boy Scouts of America, she was a passionate advocate for accessibility and inclusion. She also worked as a bus driver in the Cypress-Fairbanks School District and a teacher in Sugar Land, Texas, shaping countless young lives.
An active volunteer, she served with AARP and the Katy Senior Center, tirelessly supporting local seniors. In 2019, she was honored as Katy’s Senior of the Year for her dedication to the community.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Schmidt Funeral Home, 1344 W. Grand Parkway South, Katy, TX 77494. A service celebrating her life will take place on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at 10:30 AM at Schmidt Funeral Home – Grand Parkway Chapel, with Rev. Marlin Fenn officiating. Interment will follow in Katy Magnolia Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in her memory.
