Former Katy High School baseball coach Tom McPherson threw out the ceremonial first pitch at McPherson Field at KHS prior to the game between the Tigers and Morton Ranch at the field now named in his honor. On March 25, 2024, the Katy ISD board of trustees voted unanimously to name the baseball fields at Katy High School,6331 Highway Boulevard, Katy, for McPherson.
“Tom McPherson’s name is synonymous with Katy High School and City of Katy,” wrote Katy Times Sports Editor Tyler Tyre upon McPherson’s retirement in 2022.
McPherson coached for 45 years and was the head coach for Katy from 1987-2022, the final 34 years of his career. During that time, McPherson became the all-time winningest coach in Class 6A Texas high school baseball and finished his career with 891 wins over the course of his career. McPherson ended his career with two state tournament appearances and a number of district championships at Katy. He was inducted into the Greater Houston Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Honor in December 2022.
