Local candidates announce plans to run in May elections

Posted

It’s a new year – but still an election year, with important local positions coming up for a vote.

On May 3, voters will go to the polls to choose a mayor for the City of Katy for the next three years, and will select two trustees for Katy Independent School District’s school board, who will also hold three-year terms.

Current Katy mayor William H. “Dusty” Thiele has announced his plans to run for re-election. Thiele, now retired from the Allstate Insurance Agency he owned for many years in Katy, filed the appropriate paperwork with the city secretary on January 15.

Thiele, who did not draw an opponent when he initially ran for mayor, will face challenger Michael A. Payne, whose application lists his occupation as IT manager.

Current school board members Victor Perez and Lance Redmon have also announced their plans to run again for the positions they now hold. Perez, board member in Position 1 since 2022 and presently the board president, is a retired chief financial officer who has been a commercial banker and has also worked for several energy companies during his career. Redmon, who was elected to Position 2 on the board in May 2019 and is completing his second term, is president of Specialized Building Systems.

Perez will be faced by retired KISD educator James Cross, who served as principal at Beck Junior High and Cinco Ranch High School. KISD recently recognized Cross and his wife, Mitzi, for their contributions to the district by naming one of the district’s newest elementary schools in their honor.

As of Katy Times’ press time on January 21, no candidates had filed to run against Redmon.
