Little British cars abound in Katy in April

Posted

April 21-24th the City of Katy will host the North American MGB Register’s 2024 Convention and Car Show. What is an MGB you ask? They are small British sports cars with a huge following in the US and around the world. The MGB was manufactured in Abingdon, England from 1962 until 1980 by the MG Car Company. Nearly 500,000 cars were produced with the vast majority being shipped to the U.S.

The organizers are expecting as many as 130 MGB’s to be in town for the event. “We plan a week full of technical sessions, country drives, Texas history tours and social events for the attendees,” says Ron Redding, event co-coordinator.

The events activities will culminate with a Car Show at the Katy VFW Park, Thursday, April 24, from 9 am to 2 pm. With over 100 cars on display, the organizers expect to have examples from each year of production. There will be other MG cars on display as well. A highlight will be the MG EX186, a special factory race car intended for the 1961 24 hours of Le Mans. Its technical achievement and classic looks are legendary but due to internal company politics the car never made it to the track. It now resides in Littleton, Colorado. The public is invited to attend the show, there is no charge to walk the grounds and see these beautiful cars.

The North American MGB Register, is the nation’s largest, and one of the world’s most prestige, clubs dedicated to educating the public and preserving these classic cars. With over 2000 members, the group anticipates that people will be coming from across the U.S. and Canada to attend.

The local host of the event is the Houston MG Car Club which is proud to be able to bring this event to Katy. Bob Chalker, current president of the Club, noted, “The City of Katy has been a great partner in this event. From the Mayor’s Office to the City Council, to the Parks and Recreation Department and the Convention and Tourist Bureau, we have had fantastic support.”

The Houston MG Car Club has almost 200 member families who gather several times a month to provide educational opportunities, technical assistance, scenic drives, and social events. “The City of Katy has been a favorite place for the club to meet for many years. It has the perfect combination of meeting places and easy access to the countryside for driving. We are thrilled that we could bring this event to town.”
