In a brief statement, Katy ISD’s Media Relations Manager Maria DiPetta released the district’s plans to provide breakfasts and lunches to all minors within Katy ISD. Meals will be provided beginning with breakfast March 16 and will continue until further notice.
Children do not need to be enrolled in Katy ISD to participate in the program.
Meals will be provided in a “grab and go” manner outside of each of the cafeterias listed below by where students debark and board buses during regular school days. Students and families will not be able to enter the building when obtaining their meals. Meals will be provided Monday through Friday from 9-11:30 a.m.
According to an email sent to parents with students in the district, breakfasts will include cereal, string chees or yogurt or muffin, fruit or juice and milk. Lunches will be cold items such as pizza munchables, turkey and cheese sandwiches, or turkey and chees sticks, fresh vegetables, fruit and milk.
According to the nonprofit No Kid Hungry, about 18% of children in the U.S. live in food insecure households.
